2023.03.17 Lying About Time
===
. [00:00:00]
Welcome back, beautiful people, to another episode of Redefined Beautiful. I'm your host, faith. Today I'm going to be talking about why you need to stop lying to yourself about how much time you have. I know that can be hard to hear because you're probably think. , what is she talking about? . But don't worry, I'm gonna cover it and I am gonna be sprinkling a little tough love along the way, but I'm also going to open your eyes up to ways that you can make sure that you have time for yourself because you are worth it.
So for those of you that don't know, aside from being your podcast toes, I'm also a health coach and personal trainer, and when I'm working with my clients, the one thing that I think I hear the most is that they just don't have enough time. It's an excuse and it's a, unfortunately, it's one that we come to quite often because it's the easy answer as I just don't have enough time.
That's why this isn't working. However, there is a difference between not having enough time and not making enough [00:01:00] time. And again, I'm going to give you guys some tough love today because I think you need to hear that so you can move forward in your fitness. Without hearing this, this is just gonna constantly be an excuse for you and a, a fallback for why things aren't working.
And instead, I want you to change that mindset and say, it's not that I don't have enough time, it's that I'm just . Giving time to other areas and I'm not making myself a priority.
We're making time for social media, scrolling, we're making time for Netflix.
If we just kind of took a step back and really looked at what we were spending our time doing, there are definitely areas in our life that we could exchange for that time to exercise or. For that time to go to the grocery store and get better food for your family and to plan.
One thing that I did that was like super eye-opening is to track your time. Just take one day, for [00:02:00] example, and literally write down, or there's tons of apps out there where you can literally track where you're spending your time. So I would write down how much time I was spending on work, and then when I would open my phone and start scrolling, I would time that as well.
And it really is eye-opening just to see. where our time is being spent and it's kind of sad, , to really put it in front of you and be like, this is how much time you spend scrolling in a day. And it's not to say that these things are bad, but it is to say that we can reduce the amount of time that we're doing these things.
So that we can take that time and put it to better use somewhere else. Now, you can also be doing some of these things while you're exercising. So when you have your workout, you could be listened to. A podcast might be this very same podcast right here, but you can be listening to a podcast. You can even watch TV while you're working out.
There are ways to incorporate that, so you're getting that kind of fix that you wanted while mindlessly watching tv, but also [00:03:00] getting that workout in. It really is about finding time in the time that you already have, because you're not gonna get more hours in the day. We know that. So where can we make sure that we're making ourselves a priority and squeezing that time into our calendar.
When my clients come to me, , we're laying everything out, and one of the first things I say to them is, let me see your calendar.
Like, I wanna see your calendar. And when I'm breaking down their calendar, the one thing I don't see on there is themselves. They're not making time for themselves, whether that be for their workout, for their nutrition, for their sleep. These things are so important, and it's just so easy to say it's not a priority.
And not only are we not saying it's a priority, we're not even realizing. that that's what we're doing. So one thing I really want to encourage you guys to do is put yourself on your calendar just like everything else you do. If you are putting yourself on your calendar, you are making sure you are [00:04:00] a priority and that you are showing up for you just like you would your dentist appointment, your doctor's appointment, that appointment you make for yourself, whether that be to meal plan workout.
Get enough sleep at night, make yourself a priority, put it on the calendar and show up for you. One of the biggest things as to why you don't have enough time or why you think you don't have enough time is because you haven't learned to say no and it doesn't come easy. It is something you have to work on and work towards, and there's always going to be things where you have to.
what's the thing you're gonna say yes to, and what's the thing you're gonna say no to? Because you are going to have. An abundance of things that you are invited to, that you are hosting that you want to be a part of, but at some point you have to say no to things so you can say yes to yourself so you can say yes to your health because you are important, and if [00:05:00] you want to be able to pour into these other areas of your life.
Fully, whether that be even just in moments with your family and friends, if you wanna be fully present, you've gotta make sure that your health is taken care of or you're not going to be at your best capacity to serve those around you. So learn to say no, especially if it means that you can say yes to yourself in the process.
When you tell yourself that you don't have time for a workout, it's typically because you've already said yes to too many things and you're not balancing out. Okay, well, I have so many hours that I can spend in my social life, my work life, family. , but then you have to make time for yourself as well. So a lot of times things are gonna have to be said no to you might not get to go to everything that you're invited to.
And honestly, that's okay. That's draining. If you say yes to everything, you don't have to be that person. And I think as we age, it does get easier to say no to things, but it starts with that first thing that you're gonna say, Hey, I'm saying no. [00:06:00] Because for one, if you listen to the first thing I said, you put yourself on the calendar.
You're on the calendar, you can't break that date with. Say no to those things that come up during the time that you've already promised to yourself. One thing that I have heard over the years, and it's probably like my favorite little saying, is if it doesn't build your belief in yourself.
your business or your bank account, let it go. Just let it go. If it is not serving you in a greater purpose, then it's not meant for you. You've gotta let it go. Say no to it because you've already said yes to yourself and you want to continue to build that belief in yourself. Showing up for yourself, saying you can do it, saying that you can make time for you so you can be the best version of yourself All.
One of the biggest things that I see happening in, we are in this era of women can do it all, and I think that is amazing. I think women should be in the workforce. They should be [00:07:00] chasing their career and doing the things they wanna do. , but you can't let your career take over your health because again, like I mentioned before, if you are not at peak performance, how can you be your best self for those around you?
And that goes into your work life, that goes into your family life. If you are not, not only physically but mentally healthy, you can't be the best version of yourself, which is what you were meant to be. You have to limit yourself when it comes to. Set boundaries with your job set boundaries with your clientele.
For me, you know, I work for myself and I have clients, and I even have to set those boundaries and say, these are working hours. , certain things come up and that you can reach out about. But I'm also okay with saying if this isn't an emergency, I know I have to tell myself. Just wait. You can get back to it.
Because if I don't, then I'm constantly in that state of being overwhelmed and when I say, okay, this, I'm [00:08:00] letting this be my priority, this is taking my time in this moment, then I'm having to push back something else and it's going to be this continuous cycle of pushing things back to where you feel overwhelmed and you feel like you don't have time to work on yourself.
And those things that are important to. So your career is important. What you are doing and the difference you are making is important, but you wanna be at peak performance so you can give it your all in your career and all those other things. , you gotta start within. You gotta start with yourself and make sure that you're healthy, you're good to go, so you can really excel at that.
One thing I think a lot of people don't realize is once you start a fitness routine, and that , doesn't necessarily have to be just working out or just nutrition, but , starting this well-balanced life. You are going to find that not only once you make time for yourself when you are working out, that gives you endorphins.
You [00:09:00] feel better, you feel more energized to do these other things, and so while you're not necessarily getting more hours in the day, you still have the same 24 hours, you are more efficient in those. , you are being intentional and you are pouring your energy into things that matter. You are gonna get more time back.
You are going to feel like you are accomplishing more within each day. And isn't that what it's all about? Is making time for yourself is going to give you more time? That's amazing. It's a win-win, and it's one of those things until you really break it down and think about it that. It is such a benefit in pouring into yourself.
Not only are you pouring into yourself, you're pouring into all areas of life and you're just getting the most out of your life, and that's truly what it's all about at the end of the day. Another thing I want to tell you guys, and I think it's one of those things that. You hear it all the time and you might roll your eyes and you might think I'm being [00:10:00] cliche, but if you don't make time for your health now, you are going to be forced to make time for it in the future.
And that's usually more expensive. It's more time consuming, and it really can lead to a lot of other things. So the healthier you are now, the better you're gonna be in the future. And a lot of times when people come to me, they're already at that point of, , they already got a diagnosis of something.
Maybe it's type two diabetes, or maybe their doctor has told them that they need to lose weight so they can, , live longer But a lot of times what we're not doing is we're not saying, okay, let's get ahead of this. Let's do this now so that I don't find myself at a young age being told I need to lose weight or that I'm at high risk of certain things that typically my age group doesn't see because I haven't been taking care of myself in the.
Making [00:11:00] yourself a priority now is really, really going to benefit you in the long term. And I know sometimes it's easier said than done in that hindsight is 2020. It's easy to look back and say, oh man, I wish I would've done this sooner. And that's almost what every single person that's. Starts a fitness journey.
They say, man, I wish I would've done this sooner. So I could've had these, these results quicker and these benefits of those results quicker. And maybe I could've avoided certain diagnosis if I just would've given myself time to pour in to myself and my health. So I know I shared a lot with you of why you're not making time, but I hope the real thing here is that you.
Know of the things that you can do to make sure that you are making time for yourself. So put yourself on the calendar. You are important. You are worth it. Go ahead, schedule yourself in there and make sure that you're not breaking that commitment that you made to [00:12:00] yourself. Over and over. You're a priority, and each time that you break that commitment, you're getting further and further away from making this a lifestyle or whatever goal it is that you've set for.
put yourself on the calendar. Show up for yourself. Then I want you to start saying no to things. Remember, you're on the calendar now you're a priority. You're important. So sometimes that means you have to say no to things that you want to do to make sure that you're showing up for yourself.
also remember that your career is super important, but in order to be the best at what you do, you've gotta make sure you're as healthy as you can be inside and out. So that also means take care of your mental health as much as you're taking care of your physical health. A lot of times we don't think about those little things that we can be doing , that can really help benefit us in that area, which is getting more sleep at night.
The more sleep you have, , the more well rested you are to really perform at your [00:13:00] best. Stretching. This is super important. Take some time to stretch. So again, you are ready to pour into those things that are important to. Work is important, but it's not the only thing. , and don't forget, starting a workout routine is one of the best ways to give yourself. more time to pour into other areas of your, your life because you are gonna be more focused. You're gonna get more done after you've hit a quick workout. And don't think that your workout routine has to take 60 minutes to an hour and a half.
Find ways where you can cut that time down. A lot of times, you know, I tell my clients, work out from home. You don't have to drive 20 minutes to a. Workout for 45 minutes, and when I say workout for 45 minutes, you're bouncing around from machine to machine. It's halfway across the gym and you're not really utilizing that 45 minutes.
Start working out at home. That's gonna save on your commute. You have all your equipment right there in [00:14:00] front of you, ready to go. You don't have to feel like your workout has to take up so much of your life. Make it a smaller portion of your life. That way it's more attainable. This way, you're not going to cancel on yourself as much because it's right there in front of you, ready to go.
You don't have to go anywhere. Get an app that's gonna tell you what to do. That's what a lot of my clients, they come to me, they say, I know what to do, but I really want you just to tell me what order I need to do it in. Like, I know I need to work out and I know I need to focus on different body groups, but I want to take that one less thing off my plate.
You just tell me what to do. I'm gonna show up and do it, and then that'll be end of it. So if that means getting your. A trainer that's gonna help you do that, that is going to help you as well.
Now remember, with all this being said, I know I gave you some tough love and I told you that you were lying about how much time you have. The truth is we all have the same [00:15:00] 24 hours a day. . We all have jobs. Many of us have kids. Life is always going to be busy. But if we don't make time for ourselves and for our health, our health is gonna slow us down and just show us , how much time it's actually gonna take away from us.
So start pouring into yourself now. Little by little. Start small. Let that grow, but make time for.
because the truth is you are so worth it. This journey is worth it. And once you get started, you are going to see that this is a lifestyle. And once it becomes a lifestyle, less of your time is truly devoted into the really the back end of it, of getting started, getting set up, knowing what to do. Find things that are gonna help you save time.
But don't forget to make time for yourself. Thank you guys for joining me. I hope you guys found this super helpful and I hope you didn't find this offensive. I have been there. I have definitely [00:16:00] made that statement that I just don't have enough time to do this, but I also realized that it was just an excuse and when I really broke it down,
It really was a matter of where I was spending my time, what I was saying yes to, and it really boiled down to that me as a, an priority was just not a thing. And so when I changed my mind and shifted into making myself a priority and knowing my worth, that's when the real progress happened. And that's when this truly became a lifestyle for me.
And I really hope that for you as well. So I hope you found this helpful. And as always, stay, be.
